7. Printing
There are 3 basic sections to a BeadTool print job The Color Chart, Word Chart and Cover Page.
7.1 Color Chart
This is a section of a typical Color Chart that you will see in a printout.
Each cell you see corresponds to a bead color and its position in your pattern. The numbers indicate a color in the Color Legend (Section 7.3.2) to make it easier to distinguish between colors that look similar.
Each of these elements can be switched on or off depending on what you want to see when you print your pattern. For instance, you can turn off the colors if you're low on ink and depend solely on the numbers to stitch your pattern together.
If your pattern is too large to fit on one sheet of paper, your Color Chart will be split up into sections on different sheets of paper.
7.2 Word Chart
Row 1(L) (3)5, (1)6, (1)D, (1)I, (3)J, (2)I, (4)D, (1)7, (4)6, (1)7, (3)6, (1)5, (1)6, (2)5, (10)4,(1)5, (2)4, (4)2, (2)3, (4)2, (3)1
Row 2(R) (1)1, (3)2, (2)3, (1)2, (6)4, (1)5, (2)6, (1)7, (4)D, (2)I, (1)G, (1)D, (2)5
This is the first couple rows of the Word Chart for the Bluejay pattern (included with BeadTool 3).
The entire first row of any pattern gets stitched together no matter what type it is. The R and L indicators on each row tell you which direction you should be going. We would begin this pattern by stringing the entire first row from right to (L)eft. After that's done move on to row 2 and begin stitching from left to (R)ight.
The numbers "(3)5" in the first row translates to "thread 3 DB-0134 beads onto your pattern". Where did I get the DB-0134 just by looking at the 5 in "(3)5"? I looked it up in the Color Legend. Every number in parentheses corresponds to a bead number. See Section 7.3.2 for more information about the Color Legend. If that gets too confusing, you can change your Word Chart to print the actual DB number instead. See section 9.5 for more information about customizing your print jobs.
7.3 Color Legend
This is a section of the Color Legend of our printout. The block of color shows the color of the bead that
corresponds to the bead it's representing. The "Chart #" is the number that corresponds to both the numbers inside your Color Chart and Word Chart.
This is how I got the DB number for the Word Chart. As you can see, Chart #: 5 is DB-0134 and there are 319 of them in your pattern.
8. Assimilation
Assimilation is the act of making something similar to another thing. That's a very loose definition but it's the
best word to use in this situation. Anyways, that's exactly what we're going to be doing. It just happens to be one of the more exiting and powerful things you can do with BeadTool.
The best way to learn is to jump right in so run BeadTool and follow the steps below. You'll be a pro before you know it.
8.1 Load a picture
Before we do anything we're going to need a picture to work with. Load a picture and size it to the desired width & height. You can do this by grabbing the arrows on each side of the picture and dragging.
8.2 Size your pattern
Next we want to resize the blank pattern by clicking the up & down arrows on the right side of the Tab Panel next to the Column & Row labels.
8.3 Move the pattern
Once you get your picture and blank pattern sized to your liking, move the pattern directly on top of the picture.
8.4 Click Assimilate
Click the "Assimilate" button in the toolbar or click Picture->Assimilate from the main menu. After clicking the Assimilate button you will see a dialog box similar to the one on the left.
8.5 Choosing a palette
Choosing the right palette for the job is essential. The palette with the most colors will give you the best result. Usually Miyuki Delicas (Size 11) will give the best results depending on the graphic content of your picture.
8.6 How many colors?
Choosing the right amount of colors is sort-of like a balancing act. On one hand, the more
colors you have in your pattern, the better it's going to look. However, the more colors you have the more it's going to cost in beads. It all comes down to how many colors you're willing to work with.
8.7 Which method to use?
Depending on the picture you're assimilating, you'll want to choose an appropriate method. If you don't like the results with one, just try the other!
8.8 Starting the assimilation
After you've chosen your palette and the amount of colors you want, the only thing left to do is
click the "Begin" button and wait for the process to finish. Once it's done, the dialog box will go away.
If you're not happy with the results, click the Assimilate button and change the color count until you get the results you want.
8.9 Tips & Tricks
Moving the pattern or picture just a hair will give different results. If you only have a certain amount of colors available and you don't want to go out and
purchase the whole Delica set, use the My Palettes feature to create a palette of only the colors you do have. Then Assimilate with that custom palette.
Changing the brightness & contrast of your picture before loading it will give drastically different results.
Sometimes it's best to Assimilate with more colors than you'd like in order to get the
pattern you're trying to create. Use more colors than necessary and delete the colors you
don't want later. See Section 11.9 for details on how to do this effortlessly.
Have patience! Picasso didn't paint the Mona Lisa in one day. Toiling with your work of art until it's perfect can be relaxing and fulfilling.
9. Preferences & Options
An application should be as friendly as possible and also be customizable so that you can make
it your own. BeadTool 3 has a plethora of preferences for you to set. To view all options available to you, click View->Options if you're using the Windows version and click
BeadTool3->Preferences if you're using the Mac version. This will show a dialog box with various tabs.
9.1 General
- Check for updates on startup
If this option is enabled BeadTool will automatically connect to the beadtool.net website when the
application starts up and ask if there's a new version available. If there is, a dialog box will pop up and ask if you would like to download the update.
- Check for beta releases
Occasionally a version is released that hasn't been rigorously tested. I make these versions available for all to test on an open beta. If you uncheck this, you'll only be notified of stable releases.
- Use browser to download
This option is for people who have a hard time with updateautomatic updates getting corrupted due to firewalls and your ISP. Enabled this if you're having problems downloading the update through the application. It will open up a browser and let you download manually.
- Load last pattern on startup
If this option is checked BeadTool will load the last pattern you had open when it starts.
- Show tips on startup
If this option is enabled, you'll see a dialog with various tips and trivia when you start BeadTool.
- Always start with pencil
When BeadTool starts up, it selects the last tool you used to draw with (Oval, Rectangle, Pencil, etc). If this option is checked the application will always begin with the Pencil selected. This option is enabled by default.
- Always ask to save changes
If this option is checked BeadTool will always ask if you want to save the changes you've made to your pattern when you start a new pattern or close the application.
- Show tooltips in toolbar
Either enables the showing of tips when you hover your mouse over a toolbar button.
- Enable undo system
Uncheck this if you have a low-end computer with little resources available to your computer. The undo
system uses very little memory but everything counts. If this is left unchecked, you will not be able to undo any of your actions while editing your pattern.
9.2 Pattern
- Measurement units
Allows you to set which units of measurement you would like to see concerning your patterns physical size.
- Bead Size
This option let's you configure the pixel size (width & height) of the pattern's cells (beads).
- Show tool cursors
Enabling this option will show mouse cursors specific to the drawing tool you have selected instead of always being an arrow.
- Draw 3D highlight
It's not much to look at but can make the beads look a little more 3D. Hopefully this will improve one day.
- Release color dropper after picking color
When this option is checked, after picking a color with the Color Dropper tool the last tool you used will become enabled automatically saving you the trouble of clicking on it.
9.3 Palette
- Sort palette by
This option lets you choose to either sort the palette colors by hue or leave them unsorted. When going through over 700 colors to find the right one, this option comes in handy.
- Show these types
Lets you choose which glass types you would like to see displayed in your palette.
- Show these finishes
Lets you choose which finishes you would like to see displayed in your palette.
- Draw colors using gradient fills
If this option is set, each color in your palette & bead list will be shaded to look a little more 3D. This feature comes with a slight performance hit.
- Retain indexes for custom palettes
When BeadTool prints,or saves a pattern it "finalizes" all the colors in your pattern, changing all the indexes (1,2,3,A,B,C) for use in a
Color Chart or Word Chart. Checking this option ensures that any color in your pattern will always retain it's original index.
9.4 Picture
- Lock aspect ratio
Everything has an aspect ratio. That's just a fancy name for an object width in proportion to its height. By default, when you resize an image, BeadTool will scale your image according to its original width/height. This results in your picture not getting too squished or flattened. Unchecking this option will let you resize your picture without regard to its aspect ratio.
- Resize large pictures after loading
We've all opened a picture from a digital camera or scanner and found it to be astronomically huge. Enabling this option tells BeadTool that you would like huge images to be scaled down to a manageable size automatically.
9.5 Printing
The following preferences will determine what gets put on paper when you're ready to print. For more information about these elements, please see Section 7.
9.5.1 General
- Warn if pattern contains empty cells
Sometimes it can get hard to see if there are empty spaces in your patterns. Checking this option tells BeadTool to warn you if your pattern contains any places in your pattern that don't have a bead.
- Send raster data to printer
Checking this option assures all data sent to your printer is in Raster form (as opposed to actual shape drawing commands). This option is also handy when printing your pattern to a PDF printer driver.
9.5.2 Layout Overrides
When BeadTool prints a pattern it uses a "layout" file. This file contains detailed settings for each part of the printout including how information is to be processed and displayed. For more information about the endless possibilities of "Layouts", please see the LayoutTool documentation.LayoutTool can be downloaded for free from here. The settings below will alter the behavior of any layout you choose.
- Enable layout overrides
Enables or disabled the whole override system.
- Color Legend (Bead List)
BeadTool places numbers and letters inside the Color Chart and the Color Legend (or Bead Legend) is a reference to all beads in your pattern. If you disable this option, it will affect the Word Chart, too.
- Show bead numbers
If this option is overridden, it will always show the bead number (ie DB-0010) in the Color Legend.
- Show color description
If this option is overridden, the Color Legend will always show a textual description of the color.
- Show bead color count
If this option is overridden, the Color Chart will always show how many of each bead you will need to complete the pattern.
Color Chart (Pattern)
If this option is overridden, the pattern will always be filled with the color that corresponds to it's bead.
Show legend indexes
If this option is overridden, the pattern will always contain the numbers that correspond to each color in the Color Legend.
Word Chart
If this option is overridden, the Word chart will always use the Color Legend indexes mentioned earlier. If the "Show bead index #" Setting for the Color Legend has been overridden, this will automatically follow suit.
Condense rows
If this option is overridden, your Word Chart will always condense the Word Chart rows instead of printing each bead or bead index. This saves a lot of paper.
Direction
If this option is overridden, the direction of the Word Chart will always be what you set here.
9.7 Folders
BeadTool will automatically keep track of the last folder you saved & loaded a picture or pattern from.
- Custom Palettes
If you plan on creating your own palettes, you should set this option to wherever you keep your custom palettes.
- Custom Layouts
If you plan on creating your own layouts, you should set this option to wherever you keep your custom layouts.
- Use these designated folders for opening and saving
If this option is checked, BeadTool will not track the last used folders. Instead, it will use the designated folders you specify below.
- Patterns
Lets you specify the default folder for your patterns. When you open or save a pattern, the dialog box will automatically show this folder.
- Pictures
Lets you specify the default folder for your pictures. When you open a picture, it will automatically show this folder.
10. Common Questions (FAQ)
- 10.1 Do you have a CD I can purchase?
At this time I am not selling CDs that contain the BeadTool software. You are welcome to burn as many copies as you like but license keys are computer specific. One key that works on your computer will not work on any other computer. This prevents license keys from being shared and allows me to keep producing quality software.
- 10.2 Can I purchase by mailing you a money order?
Yes. If you aren't comfortable making purchases online you can order by sending a money order payable to Fired Up Software for the amount of $35 USD to the address below.
- Fired Up Software
- BeadTool
- P.O. Box 1655
- Nampa, ID 83651
Please include your email address with your payment. Money orders sent without an email address will be returned.
After receipt of the money order, you will be sent an email with all the necessary information needed to get your copy activated.
- 10.3 Do I have to purchase another license if my computer becomes inoperable?
Most likely not. If your computer fails just email me and I can reset your account so that you can reinstall BeadTool on a different computer.
- 10.4 Can I use BeadTool on my laptop without purchasing twice?
Yes. Each purchase allows you to install on a maximum of 2 computers.
- 10.5 Why do I need to let BeadTool access the Internet?
In order to Activate your copy of BeadTool, it needs to know your email address, beadtool.net password, Computer ID number and your license key. In the past, most of my customer support issues concerning activation arose from simple typos. Doing things this way enables BeadTool to communicate with the website and do everything for you.
Note: After you have activated BeadTool, Internet access is no longer needed.
- 10.6 Why are my downloads corrupted?
Corrupted downloads can be caused by a variety of things. Try setting your Internet Options Security settings to "Medium". See Section 11.5 for more information.
If you have correctly set your Internet Options and are still having problems, it's most likely it's your firewall or ISP.
If you can't seem to make the automatic downloads work, please download the update directly from my website instead of through the BeadTool application.
- 10.7 What's the difference between an upgrade and an update?
An upgrade is something you usually pay for. For instance, when I released BeadTool 3, everybody who paid $14.95 was upgraded from version 2 to version 3.
An update is something I release periodically to fix bugs and introduce new features. You do not pay for these.
- 10.8 What's your versioning schema?
BeadTool has a numeric versioning system (Major.Revision.Bug)
- Major
The Major version indicates a new product or a major revision
- Minor
This indicates a substantial change or improvement(s) in the software
- Bug
This number indicates that there was a bug in the Minor release
